San Francisco, California

With over 15 years of professional experience in health care public relations Thomas Boyer provides communications counsel to, and implements programs on behalf of, top tier corporate and nonprofit entities in the diabetes arena. His work on former President Clinton’s Health Care Task Force, with numerous elected officials and related nonprofit organizations gives him particular insight into reimbursement, insurance issues, consumer health and specialty health provider issues affecting the diabetes market.
He currently serves as the executive director for the Diabetes Care Coalition; a partnership consisting of the leading pharmaceutical and medical device companies, government entities and non-profit organizations dedicated to the management of diabetes in America. Other client activities included representing the American Diabetes Association in legislative and public relations efforts that work to improve the lives of people living with diabetes. He also worked on behalf of LifeScan, Inc., to enhance the reimbursement climate for blood glucose monitoring products. In addition, he consults frequently with President Bush’s Administration, third party organizations and interested government agencies to implement and assess programs aimed at improving the lives of people affected by diabetes.
Mr. Boyer’s nonprofit experience was gleaned from his time directing the national and local public affairs efforts of the American Diabetes Association. His work secured coverage for diabetes therapies by Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance programs. Working directly with the diabetes community, he crafted the supporting program materials that helped convince President Bill Clinton and Speaker Newt Gingrich of the need to improve diabetes coverage for the Medicare population. More recently, he worked with Members of Congress and the Bush Administration to draft legislation that provides coverage for diabetes needs in a prescription drug program for America’s senior citizens.
Prior to starting The Boyer Group, Mr. Boyer worked for GCI Group. During his tenure, he served clients in the biotechnology, medical device, non-profit healthcare and pharmaceutical industries. He also worked in an official capacity to establish an international and US presence for the agency in the medical field of endocrinology.
Before joining GCI Group, Mr. Boyer was employed by Fleishman-Hillard and Edelman public relations. During his tenure, he supported marketing efforts for Hoechst Marion Roussel’s diabetes franchise, worked with thought leaders at Knoll Pharmaceuticals to position their obesity management agent Meridia®, and provided account service to DuPont-Merck, Molina Medical Centers, Johnson & Johnson Health Care Systems, and CIGNA Healthcare. During his time with Fleishman-Hillard, he also guided investor communications for medical device start-up companies MicroMed Technology, Inc., and Surgivision, Inc.
Mr. Boyer received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from Hope College in Holland, Michigan. He volunteers for a variety of diabetes interests on the national and local levels.
